The other way, California to Texas, both brokers report more: Sherpa $1,050–$1,425, Ship A Car $1,050–$1,450, with FreightWaves at $1,064–$1,475. Sherpa’s city pairs run 1,300 to 1,930 miles, and it says the trip “typically takes two to six days once the carrier loads.”

Which direction costs more

What the data shows:

What nobody explains: none of these sources says why California to Texas costs more. Sherpa’s Texas-to-California page even says “Carriers move steadily in both directions on this lane.” So treat direction as something to check, not a rule. Get quotes for your own dates, and if your plans are flexible, price both legs before you commit to one.

Major city pairs

Sherpa’s route pages, both directions, plus what our calculator returns for the same miles. The calculator range is wider because it uses national per-mile bands, not this lane’s own data.

Sherpa lists each westbound pair within a mile or three of the eastbound one (Dallas to Los Angeles is 1,436 miles). On every pair, its westbound range is lower.

Transit time between the states

SourceDays once the car is picked up
Sherpa“2-6 days” for the lane; some pairs, such as Los Angeles–Austin, “1-5 days”
Ship A Car“typically takes 3 to 6 days depending on the endpoints”
FreightWaves Checkpoint (consumer guide, by distance)1,000–1,500 miles: 4–6 days; 1,500–2,000 miles: 5–7 days

Add the pickup window before that. Sherpa suggests “Two weeks of lead time” for a Texas pickup, and for this lane says to “Book one to two weeks ahead.” More on timing in how long car shipping takes.

Season on this lane

Sherpa’s two route pages describe the same pattern. Eastbound: “Snowbird traffic in winter and summer moving season push California to Texas rates up. Late fall and early spring are usually quieter.” Westbound: “Winter brings snowbirds west and summer brings movers, and both push prices up.” Neither page gives a percentage. Our calculator’s peak option (June–August, +10–20% from Sherpa’s calculator page) covers only the summer part.

Location matters too. Sherpa says pickups and deliveries near I-10, I-20 or I-40 price lower, while “Ranch towns in West Texas or coastal spots north of Santa Barbara cost more.”

After delivery: registration deadlines
